Alonzo "Jack" Royce Windley 1922-2017LCDR Alonzo "Jack" Royce Windley of Pensacola, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 21, 2017. LCDR Windley was born at Pantego, NC on September 3, 1922. He graduated from high school in 1940 and attended NC State College, leaving college in 1942 to join the US Navy as a V-5 Aviation Cadet. He received his Navy Wings and was commissioned as an Ensign, USNR on 18 October 1944. He was commissioned a LTJG, USN on 1 July 1946.He has served on nine aircraft carriers with Fighter Bomber Squadron 3 and Fighter Squadron 4A, two helicopter Anti-Submarine Warfare Squadrons, HS-1 and HS-7, a Ship's Company Tour on the USS Palau CVE-122 as CIC and Air Intelligence Officer and served with Commander Carrier Division Fourteen Staff as Air Operations Officer aboard the USS Wasp CVS-18 and USS Tarawa CVS-40. Windley retired from the Navy on 1 June 1963 after 21 years of active service.He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Margaret Horne Windley and his son-in-law, Joseph Patrick Shields. He is survived by his daughter Susan W. Shields, his sons Dr. Michael B. Windley and CDR J. Stephen (Debbie) Windley, 10 grandchldren, 21 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Gulf Breeze for 37 years and of Myrtle Grove Baptist Church since 2003, serving as an Ordained Deacon in both churches.He was past president of the MG Community Club, the MG Football League, Pensacola Beach Home Owners Association, the Pensacola Beach Volunteer Fire Department, Gulf Breeze Kiwanis Club and charter member of Escambia Masonic Lodge 15.A memorial service will be held at the Myrtle Grove Baptist Church on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. with Reverend Ron Lentine officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Myrtle Grove Baptist Church Building Fund.Arrangements under the direction of Oak Lawn Funeral Home, Pensacola, FL.
